12 Golden Country Greats is Ween's fifth album, and third on Elektra Records. This album marked the first time Ween limited themselves to a specific genre of music. According to producer and friend of the band Ben Vaughn, Ween asked him to produce the album as he had already been working with musicians on the Nashville country scene, having produced Arthur Alexander's Lonely Just Like Me album and co-written songs with Rodney Crowell and Gary Nicholson.

12 Golden Country Greats is Ween's fifth album, and third on Elektra Records. Bringing in a wide variety of seasoned (and sometimes legendary) Nashville musicians (including Charlie McCoy, Buddy Spicher, Bobby Ogdin and The Jordanaires), the album sought to recreate the sound of golden-age country music with a great amount of success, while also combining this sound with classic Ween on such tracks as "Piss Up a Rope

12 Golden Country Greats. By: Ween (1996, Rock). God Ween Satan: Live by Ween. Live In Chicago by Ween. God Ween Satan – The Oneness by Ween.

Vaughn told them they should record the album in Nashville with real country session players. And he had the connections to make it happen. Plenty of musicians agreed to play on the record, but a few of them refused. Vaughn described the process in an interview with Taste of Country: I basically told them, "Some of the material is blue, and I just want to tell you up front. We lost a couple of guys. Ween's sense of humor was often childish, so that's no surprise. Overall, though, the duo's incredible songwriting talent shines through on all 10 tracks of 12 Golden Country Greats. 12 of the Greatest Alternative Power Trios of All Time. 12 Golden Country Greats. Album Name 12 Golden Country Greats. Released date 16 July 1996. Labels Elektra Records.

  • So, is this the one with the Muhammad Ali sample?

  • The Flying Nun #d edition does NOT have the M. Ali samples on it, just a very abrupt edit. Too bad...

  • is this the "Saddle Brown" variant ? ? ? ? ?

  • There's another listing for the one with the one with the "saddle brown vinyl" hype sticker. 2016 repress.

  • I sold my copy of this ages ago, and I am trying to remember.. does the first vinyl release have the Muhammad Ali audio on it or was it printed up after they were forced to remove it? How about the other 1996 unnumbered version listed on discogs?

  • The Flying Nun #d edition does NOT have the M. Ali samples on it, just a very abrupt edit. Too bad...

  • I currently own the numbered version and the Muhammad Ali clip is cut out unfortunately. I have no idea about the other vinyl pressings. I read somewhere that the clip is only on the first CD pressings but you'll have to fact check me on that.

  • Unfortunately, it does not. Though, I can't speak to the unnumbered version.

  • Bought this and White Pepper - both my first experience with Plain pressing - and I must say... I am very impressed.

  • This is a review of the Plain Recordings black vinyl pressing. I've been let down by some of Plain's releases in the past, including the Ween colored vinyl box set, which was noisy throughout all sides of every record. The black vinyl pressings of this, The Mollusk, and White Pepper, however, all of them sound incredible. Better sound than the CDs in each case and very minimal noise that's easy to ignore. On to the actual album - There's some funny lyrics and a few crazy instrumental elements thrown in here and there, all great fun. Aside from that though, and my favorite part of this album hands down, there's some seriously impressive fiddle/harmonica/banjo picking/slide guitar alllll up in here.

  • Might as well try Amazon, return them till you get a good one.

  • I have the black mollusk and it sounds really bad...but I bought it used, should I give it a chance

  • I have a copy of this that isn't brown - just traditional black vinyl. Anybody know what this could be?

  • You have the original release from 1996. It’s very valuable. The plain recordings are considered shitty quality (because a lot of them are, and we were ripped from the CD!)

  • That's the 2009 release. All the original Plain releases are black and sound better
