John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes and was at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions and appeared on many albums by other musicians, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Over the course of his career, Coltrane's music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension
The tension can be felt on the four performances (two standards and a pair of blues), particulalry when Dorham is playing. This unintentionally fascinating encounter has often been reissued under Coltrane's name (including as a Blue Note CD) but it was originally Taylor's date.

To top it off Kenny Dorham sounds absolutely lost between these two. And the rhythm section with Louis Hayes on drums (a solid hard bop guy who sounds great with Cannonball) is fighting against Taylor's rhythmic ideas.
JOHN COLTRANE - Coltrane Time. Boxset, Compilation · 1962.
A lost album of originals by John Coltrane, the American saxophonist who took jazz to new heights of freedom and expression, has been unearthed. The album, being released on 29 June as Both Directions at Once: the Lost Album, was recorded in a session on 6 March 1963, at the Van Gelder studios in New Jersey. Joining Coltrane in the quartet that also recorded classic albums such as A Love Supreme, Coltrane, and Ballads, are Jimmy Garrison on double bass, Elvin Jones on drums, and McCoy Tyner on piano . Both Directions at Once was recorded at an intensely fertile time for Coltrane and his quartet – as well as Ballads and Impressions, he also released a collaboration with Duke Ellington in 1963.
