The Tale of the Tape is a rock album by Billy Squier that was released in May 1980. It was his first solo album, following two albums with the band Piper. The disc spent three months on Billboard's album chart, setting Squier's career in motion. Several of its tracks were popular on AOR (Album Oriented Rock) radio. Although no songs from the album reached the charts, the song "The Big Beat" has been notably sampled by hip hop artists, including Run-D.

Billy Squier spent the late '70s watching his band Piper rise through the rock 'n' roll ranks, but after two albums with the band, he knew he needed something more, and by the end of the decade, he'd departed the group's ranks to begin his solo career. I wasn't getting any younger," Squier told Robert Haber. I had to take control of my albums and I couldn't do that without hassles within Piper. That album turned out to be The Tale of the Tape, a nine-track collection that heralded Squier's arrival as a solo artist when it reached stores in May 1980. Like a lot of new artists, he found it difficult to achieve immediate mainstream success, but the record's huge riffs, stomping beats and singalong choruses helped Squier make early inroads at rock radio that would benefit him in a big way later in the decade. It moved me up a notch on the ladder and it got a lot of airplay.

Emerging from the band Piper with a clear vision for a solo career that would include tough, loud guitars and stellar pop songs, Billy Squier released the criminally underrated The Tale of the Tape in 1980. His follow-up album, Don’t Say No, would include the big hits ( The Stroke, My Kinda Lover ) that brought him to FM radio and MTV, but nearly every song on this debut is equal to all that followed. The Big Beat is a fantastic opener with its solid drums paving the way for Squier’s We Will Rock You -type salutation
