In this film, composer Howard Goodall explores just why this album is still seen as so innovative, so revolutionary and so influential. With the help of outtakes and studio conversations between the band, never heard before outside of Abbey Road, Howard gets under the bonnet of Sgt Pepper. In this film, Howard Goodall shows that it is the sheer ambition of Sgt Pepper - in its conception, composition, arrangements and innovative recording techniques - that sets it apart.
Calamity Jane is a 1953 American Technicolor western musical film loosely based on the life of Wild West heroine Calamity Jane, and explores an alleged romance between Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok in the American Old West. The film starred Doris Day as the title character and Howard Keel as Hickok. It was devised by Warner Brothers in response to the success of Annie Get Your Gun.
Sort name: Keel, Howard.
Singer with a winning smile who stood up to JR. Sheila Whitaker. Howard Keel, who has died of cancer aged 85, was a gutsy baritone with a cheerful swagger and a wonderful smile who gave larger than life performances in film musicals such as Annie Get Your Gun (1950), Show Boat (1951) and Seven Brides For Seven Brothers (1954). He had shoulders that any woman would want to swoon on, and Hedda Hopper, the notorious gossip columnist, described him as a "big hunk of masculinity".
Howard Keel was an American singer and actor who starred in several MGM musicals. In 1988, his album ‘Just for You’ charted at in the UK Albums Chart. During the 1990s and the early 2000s, Keel had roles in the plays ‘South Pacific,’ ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘White Christmas. In 1951, Howard Keel played the male lead in the musical romantic drama film ‘Show Boat’. Based on Edna Ferber’s 1926 novel and the stage musical of the same name, the film was one of MGM's most famous musicals and the third-most commercially profitable film of that year. In 1954, the actor starred in another MGM’s production, ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,’ which earned the Academy Award for the Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.
I was so surprised by just how magnificent Keel's voice is, a true classic barritone. Featuring musical melodies such as 'Oklahoma!', 'Oh What A Beautiful Morning' and 'Old Man River' to heartfelt ballands like 'Memories' and 'Send In The Clowns', this features a handful of his greatest songs. The band playing with him sounds majestic and fresh, just like something from the golden era of musicals back in the 1950s.
