Houston released her third solo album Any Way You Like It in 1976. The first single released was her version of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' 1975 song "Don't Leave Me This Way". In February 1977 the track hit Number 1 in the . 1978: Ready to Roll R&B 1979: Ride to the Rainbow Pop 1977: Thelma & Jerry – Thelma Houston and Jerry Butler Pop R&B 1978: Two to One – Thelma Houston and Jerry Butler. 1982: Reachin' All Around.

Ready to Roll is the eighth album by Thelma Houston, released in 1978 on Motown Records. It was a modest success, peaking only at in the US R&B charts. The single "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning" gained momentum in 1979 and was included in a remixed version on Houston's Ride to the Rainbow album in 1979. The album was released on CD in 2018 by Soulmusic Records, in a compilation that also includes The Devil in Me, Ride to the Rainbow and Reachin' All Around. Saturday Night, Sunday Morning" (Mitchell Botler, Norma Helms).

Thelma Houston was a mainstay artist at Motown from 1971-1979, worthy additions to previous SMR reissues of Thelma's Motown work. The Devil In Me (1977), Ready To Roll (1978) and Ride To The Rainbow (1979) focus on her work in the wake of the international success of her timeless cover of 'Don't Leave Me This Way', which catapulted Thelma to worldwide mainstream recognition

Motown released one more Thelma Houston album after this one; then Ms. "Don't Leave Me This Way" jumped to RCA Records. Ready to Roll has live and dead spots. The uptempo "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning," the only 45 release, is a fast, funky disco number with potential that somehow had chart phobia. Whoever decides to put out a multi-disc Thelma Houston package should include a few of these babies. While some selections like "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning" (which, oddly, was also on Ready to Roll ) are a bit formulaic, Houston's fiery vocals never are. "I Want to Go Back There Again," "Imaginary Paradise," and Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright's "Just a Little Piece of You" got lost on this poor-selling album.
