Together with umentalist Will Gregory, Goldfrapp wraps her unearthly voice around songs that borrow from '60s pop, cabaret, folk, and electronica without sounding derivative or unfocused.

It is defined by its eerie yet enchanting mixture of cinematic strings, synths and Goldfrapp’s haunting vocals, taking influence from a variety of music styles such as 1960s pop, cabaret, folk and electronica. The album’s primary themes are deception, isolation, the oppressive wilderness and obsessional feelings, with a sci-fi tinge

Goldfrapp are an English electronic music duo from London, formed in 1999. Goldfrapp's second album Black Cherry, which incorporated glam rock and synthpop sounds into their music, was released in 2003.

Felt Mountain is the debut album by English electronic duo Goldfrapp. It was released in the United Kingdom on 11 September 2000 by Mute Records. The album takes influence from a variety of music styles such as 1960s pop, cabaret, folk and electronica. It was released by Mute Records on 11 September 2000 in the United Kingdom. Felt Mountain was a top seventy-five album in Goldfrapp's native United Kingdom, and was certified gold in October 2001.

Felt Mountain opens with "Lovely Head," a track that juxtaposes a shuffling drum beat and whistling that sounds like it could be 50 years old with futuristic analog beeps. Goldfrapp's voice, with all its warmth and expressiveness, sounds instantly familiar. And it retains this familiarity over the course of the album, excepting a throaty, Siouxsie-esque yelp or two in "Human," and a bizarre passage at the end of "Deer Stop," in which her voice is made to sound eerily childlike. Creepy, especially considering the sexual undertones present.

  • Shocking pressing... noisy, distorted in the loud parts. Not happy at all.I see others are praising this pressing but in my case it's a complete let down.I've had it with coloured vinyl now... totally crap.

  • A truly phenomenal pressing. I never thought wax could sound this eargasmic!

  • As with the other reviews, my copy of this pressing sounds fantastic.

  • Where is the number on this? Can’t find mine anywhere.

  • This pressing has one virtue: it taught me to read the comments before I purchase. Sounds horrible, low level which compels to turn up the volume to essentially hear unusual surface noise.

  • The rumors are true. This thing sounds fantastic. Light candles and hop in the bubble bath.

  • Alison has a beautiful voice. It is on this album her voice rests most beautifully. It's a very strange - alien - album, beguiling with its beauty; under its surface many other creatures lurk. When you listen to the lyrics and strange noises, you notice the album is more experimental than it first seems with its seamless beauty. The whistling on Lovely Head is an example of the album's brilliance; it is timeless, the stuff of classics. (So good it could be exploited for a major commercial - luckily we can forget the product they were selling and the sound remains.) "Fascist baby" with a candy sweetener; this is an album to listen to and dream along with.[Regarding the white vinyl pressing; STUMM188X. Barcode: 5-414939-924460. Not the RSD pressing which some have complained about. It's rarely something with which I notice a difference, but the sound quality is astounding. Of course you have to turn the volume up from the CD setting. Volume up, the vinyl sounds better than the CD - gut reaction. It genuinely made me wonder . . . I am not a techno head, why can't they always get it right like this?]

  • My copy seems to be a good pressing - clear as a bell.

  • I pretty much stay right away from 180gram reissues, more often than not they are very disappointing, ( usual reasons, they can sound like someone has smothered your speakers with a blanket, they can sound way too tinny, sibilance issues, horrible distortion from being pressed too loud etc)Even though I have the original pressing of Goldfrapps Felt Mountain which has some serious distortion issues (whether it was a pressing fault or the fact I bought it 2nd hand and previous owner damaged it with a worn stylus or something I'm not sure) I thought this excellent album was worth taking a chance on with the 180 gram reissue even just out of curiosity.I have just purchased and listened to the european white vinyl 180 gram reissue and I am extremely impressed. It just felt right to my ears straight away, not pressed too quiet or too loud, no dreaded sibilance or inner groove distortion. The real test was the high frequency sounds, again very little to absolutely no distortion.I was even surprised at how well it handled the brilliant track Deer Stop, even the distorted vocals didn't get over distorted which is even more remarkable considering it closes out side 1 ( anyone familiar with vinyl will know that distortion is much more evident towards the end of each side)I think I heard maybe 2 very faint ticks on the whole album and background noise was almost non existent, it was beautifully quiet throughout. No vinyl pressing is ever going to be perfect there's always gonna be some surface noise, distortion, sibilance etc, either there will be very little and hardly noticeable, somewhere inbetween or alot, that's just the nature and charm of vinyl, but the quality of the pressing and how it's treated on repeated spins can make a huge difference. In closing I would definitely recommend this european 180gram reissue to anyone who wants this album on vinyl, hopefully a vinyl reissue of Goldfrapps Seventh Tree can be done this well, I'd buy it in a flash.

  • Skip this and get the European pressing. Returned my RSD copy and did just that. Better quality all around and a heavyweight pressing (with accurate reproduction of the original labels, unlike this one). I'm over these rush-released Record Store Day "exclusives." All hype and rarely high quality due to the overburdening of pressing plants. Goldfrapp had NO idea this was even coming out (tellingly released through BMG) but thankfully were able to rectify the poor quality control with the Mute version. Oh, and if you're concerned about collecting a "limited edition" version that will rise in value over time - don't be. 4000 copies for a 15-year-old reissue by completely niche artist (in the US) on vinyl is a LOT, especially with an equivalent, higher quality version also on the market.

  • Please continue making adorable generalizations about people, I'm sure it'll go well for you. Cheers ;)

  • Record Store Day is for bearded hipsters who love paying $40 for $4 records. Then they go home and listen to it on their USB turntable through their apple computer. You know I'm correct so there is no sense arguing or trying to defend yourself if this is you.

  • Excellent album and really nice white vinyl. Sound quality is really good and it doesn't skip.

  • Amazing quality. This is probably one of the best sounding albums that I own (not that I have a large collection). The white vinyl is also gorgeous in and of itself. So glad that one of my favorite albums turned out this good.

  • Thanks y'all for the comments here and on the other vinyl re-releases about the quality.I waited and waited and now I am listening to a perfect copy (STUMM188X) and I am very happy!

  • At last... 2 copies I've tried of this european Mute release, both PERFECT.After returning 3 terrible copies of the american RSD LPs (all were noisy as hell), This is the one to get!

  • first time ever and I mean really for very first time there is a pure vinyl without any surface noise and clicks pops and any kind of bad experience! ......superb piece of vinyl!!!!

  • Europe here, got this from my local record store, delay after delay but finally it's here and it is....Awesome.I was kinda worried because the US-RSD Pressing was reported to have major quality issues. This one sounds very nice and clean throughout UNTIL the last track "Horse Tears",which has a slight pop/crackle at the beginning of the track for about a minute. Little annoying, sure, but I heard way worse things (e.g. 2nd Hand 70's vinyl) so I can take it, and you should too, cause it's Felt Mountain on vinyl!

  • #1800 reporting in. sounds fine. yes the levels may be a little low by my mixer can compensate.

  • Europe version is comming out tomorrow and hopefully on a black vinyl!

  • it has been delayed for several times now..http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/news/goldfrapp-felt-mountain-vinyl-lp/http://www.mutebank.co.uk/mutebank/mutebank/Felt-Mountain-White-Vinyl-Edition/4M8Q0000000

  • Where exactly did you see it's being released...?

  • #643 from turntablelab NYC shop. Lucky it sounds great.

  • This all sounds nice enough as a bit of mellow background music, but apart from the remixes on the bonus disc a lot of it is a bit sameish.

  • I had the same problems as many of you here with my copy. I wrote to Mute about them and they forwarded the email to BMG. One week later I received another copy without any issues. I suggest you do the same.

  • I emailed Mute and I also got a replacement from BMG. It's still not a perfect pressing, but it is noticeably better than the other copy I have.

  • 1845/4000After cleaning the record:Volume is low, surface noises, cracks on side B.Not a good pressing, disappointing and disheartening, they spat on this beautiful record.

  • #0342 - Awesome copy, no surface noise, no pops, no clicks, though the LP's volume is a bit lower than my other LPs but it sounds perfect on both sides! Lucky to have a decent copy after reading the reviews

  • Well my copy is slightly wraped but that did not affect it though - and its thickness is equal, and there is no hissing as well, I've played it almost 5 times now with attentive listening on a high volume level and it plays perfectly. I guess I am extremely lucky
