What would I do without your smart mouth Drawing me in, and you kicking me out You've got my head spinning, no kidding, I can't pin you down What's going on in that beautiful mind I'm on your magical mystery ride And I'm so dizzy, don't know what hit me, but I'll be alright. My head's under water But I'm breathing fine You're crazy and I'm out of my mind. How many times do I have to tell you Even when you're crying you're beautiful too The world is beating you down, I'm around through every mood You're my downfall, you're my muse My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues I can't stop singing, it's ringing, in my head for you.

The album's planned title was Africa Talks to You, but it was retitled in response to Marvin Gaye's album What's Going On, released six months before. There's a Riot Goin' On reached the Billboard Pop Album and Soul Album charts at number one upon its release, while its lead single "Family Affair" topped the Pop Singles chart. By 2001, it had sold one million copies and been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In the fall of 1971 Stone delivered the final mixes to the CBS Records offices, relieving the worried Davis. CBS issued "Family Affair" as the first single, the band's first in nearly two years. It became their fourth and final number-one pop hit.

Marvin Gaye's masterpiece What's Going On turns 40 on Saturday. Marvin Gaye's What's Going On was an instant classic, as well as one of the most influential records from a passionate and enduring icon. Released on May 21, 1971, the album is an introspective, politically charged nine-piece song cycle that addresses the ravages of the Vietnam War, urban decay, drug abuse, civil unrest and injustice. The whole world could stand to tune in, as well. Forty years ago, Gaye found a way to offer up a prayer in the form of a powerful question with an equally ringing affirmation.

What's Going On may refer to: What's Going On (TV series), an American game show. What's Going On?, a 2008 tour by British comedian Mark Steel. What's Going On (book), a 1997 book collection by Nathan McCall. What's Going On (Marvin Gaye album), 1971. What's Going On (Johnny "Hammond" Smith album), 1971. What's Goin' On (Frank Strozier album), 1977. What's Goin' On Ai, a 2006 album by Ai. What's Going On (Dirty Dozen Brass Band album), a 2006 album by the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

These feelings had been bubbling up between 1967 and 1970, during which he felt increasingly caged by Motown's behind-the-times hit machine and restrained from expressing himself seriously through his music. Instead of releasing listeners from their troubles, as so many of his singles had in the past, Gaye used the album to reflect on the climate of the early '70s, rife with civil unrest, drug abuse, abandoned children, and the spectre of riots in the near past.
