State of Decay is the fourth serial of the 18th season in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which was first broadcast in four weekly parts on BBC1 from 22 November to 13 December 1980. In the serial, three vampire lords rule over a village deliberately kept at a low development level for a thousand years. The lords intend to revive their giant leader vampire the "Great One" that converted them from humans after their spaceship crashed on the planet.

After his departure, Dicks continued to be associated with the programme, writing four more scripts: Robot (1975, the opening story of Tom Baker's era as the Fourth Doctor), The Brain of Morbius (1976), Horror of Fang Rock (1977), State of Decay (1981) and the 20th anniversary special The Five Doctors (1983)

It was one of the very few pieces of Doctor Who merchandise that was released on " audio cassette. As of September 2017, it is, along with The Stones of Blood and The Androids of Tara one of only three audio novelisations of a Doctor Who serial which are radically different from the print novelisation of the story. The main difference in the story on cassette is one of perspective. Almost all scenes are told from the Doctor and Romana's point of view. The Pickwick version of State of Decay was first released on a single cassette by Pickwick themselves in 1981, about six months before the Target version hit stores. It was then re-released in 1985 by Ditto as a two-cassette pack.

Science Fiction & Fantasy. Doctor Who and the State of Decay. Back to Science Fiction & Fantasy. Geoffrey Beevers reads this exciting novelisation of a 1980 TV adventure featuring the Fourth Doctor, as played by Tom Baker. The Doctor, Romana and K9 - and a young stowaway called Adric - are trapped in the alternative universe of E-Space. Seeking help, the land on an unknown planet. There they find a nightmare world where oppressed peasants toil for the Lords who live in the Tower, and where all learning is forbidden: a society in a state of decay. What is the terrifying secret of the Three Who Rule? What monstrous creature stirs beneath the Tower, waking from its thousand year sleep?

Doctor Who. Lalla Ward. Terrance Dicks wrote this for the Hinchcliffe era in the mid 1970s but because the BBC was producing a prestigious version of Dracula starring Frank Finlay and Louis Jordan it was decided to dump Dicks script and instead he wrote Horror Of Fang Rock to kick start season 15. I've always considered Fang Rock to be an overlooked masterpiece and in comparison State Of Decay is an inferior work. That's not to say it's bad, it's just not exceptional and to be fair it sticks out slightly more due to its homage to horror in general and Hammer horror movies in particular.

Universe: Doctor Who. Author: Terrance Dicks. Published by: BBC Worldwide Consumer Publishing. Seeking help, they land on an unknown planet. What is the terrifying secret of the Three Who Rule? What monstrous creature stirs beneath the Tower, waking from its thousand year sleep?

Doctor Who: Nightmare of Eden . Tom Baker. Doctor Who - New Beginnings (The Keeper of trovalva) . Writers: Terrance Dicks. Producers: John Nathan-Turner. Another adventure for everyone's favourite time traveller. When the Doctor (Tom Baker), Romana and K9, still trapped in E-Space, land on a medieval planet, they do not realize that Adric has stowed away on the TARDIS with them. They are soon in need of his help when they discover that the local society is ruled over by three vampire lords - Zargo, Camilla and Aukon.
