Compared to Sudan Archives, you can definitely hear that impulse on Sink. Nont For Sale and Pay Attention might still feel like they take place under a blazing sun, but a lot of the other tracks on the EP conjure up more aqueous, nocturnal settings. The rippling violin notes in Beautiful Mistake sound like water lapping over stones in a riverbed; both the title track and Mind Control have a smeared, lightly psychedelic quality to them that approximates the feeling of hearing music from underwater. It’s a gratifying sequel to Sudan Archives, and leaves you wondering what she could pull off over the course of a whole album. You can hear it for yourself a few days early over at NPR. Sink is out 5/25 via Stones Throw. Tags: Sudan Archives.

Sudan Archives is the stage name of Los Angeles-based musician Brittney Parks. She is a violinist and vocalist, and is signed to Stones Throw Records. Parks grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. She began playing violin in the 4th grade. Besides a year of musical training, she is self-taught, learning by playing from ear in her church's choir. When Parks was 17, she told her mother she didn't like her name, which is where her nickname, Sudan, comes from

Sudan Archives' Sink comes out May 25. Jack McKain/Courtesy of the artist. Note: NPR's First Listen audio comes down after the album is released. However, you can still listen with the this site or Apple Music playlist at the bottom of the page. Over the course of her young career, Sudan Archives hasn't let her growing audience get too comfortable. The NPR Music Slingshot artist, born Brittney Parks, defied categorization on last year's self-titled EP (which featured "Come Meh Way," one of NPR Music's Top 100 Songs of 2017)
