Since 2005 Manring is member of the band DeMania with guitarist Alex de Grassi and percussionist Christopher Garcia. Manring remains active, touring the world for performances and clinics Music and musical influences. Because of his association with the Windham Hill label Manring often was seen as a New Age musician. He doesn't see himself as belonging to a certain style or genre and often jokes about categorising his music the first New Age–Death metal–Fusion–album".

Ray Obiedo (born January 27, 1952 in Richmond, California) is an American contemporary jazz guitarist. Obiedo grew up in Richmond, California, and began playing guitar at age 17. Initially he played both jazz and R&B, appearing on record with Herbie Hancock, Julian Priester, and Sheila E. He was the leader of the jazz fusion group Kick and the rock band Rhythmus 21. In 1989 he signed with Windham Hill Records, with whom he released five albums in eight years.

Windham Hill Records was an independent record label that specialized in instrumental acoustic music. It was founded by guitarist William Ackerman and Anne Robinson (née McGilvray) in 1976 and was popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Private Music, also a subsidiary of BMG, has issued some back-catalog releases under the Windham Hill Records imprint. Ackerman invited like-minded musicians to the label, including Alex De Grassi, his cousin and an acoustic guitarist who became one of Windham Hill's best sellers. Ackerman began recording friends and fellow Bay Area musicians, and Robinson would market and design the albums.

Windham Hill Records is a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment specializing in acoustic, new age and folk music. Originally founded in 1976 as an Independent record label by guitarist and carpenter William Ackerman and Anne Robinson, then married, Windham Hill was a successful and well-respected music label during its height in the 1980s and 1990s. For the first time in over 15 years, many of the early Windham Hill artists who recorded under Ackerman performed together on August 27, 2006 at the Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, California near San Jose. Artists included: Barbara Higbie, Jim Brickman, Tuck & Patti, Alex de Grassi, Liz Story, Philip Aaberg, Michael Manring, Samite, David Cullen, Tracy Silverman, Lisa Lynne, George Tortorelli, Sean Harkness (who also planned and invited the musicians), and, of course, Will Ackerman.

Disc: 2. Welcoming - Michael Manring. 2. The 19A - Nightnoise. 3. Montana Half Light - Philip Aaberg. 4. Shadowdance - Shadowfax. 5. Pittsburgh 1901 (Theme From Mrs. Soffel) - Mark Isham. 6. The Calling - Stein & Walder. 7. Gwenlaise - Scott Cossu. Windham Hill put the "new" into "new age" music. Each year they publish a sampler which is a "greatest hits of the year" album, intended to introduce new and talented artists. I have played this CD monthly since 1994.
