U Roy - Dread In A Babylon LP 1975 Virgin Records (US release), Ewart 'U Roy' Beckford built his name on various sound systems in Jamaica during the 1960's until he reigned as the top deejay during 1969 when he worked for Osbourne 'King Tubby' Ruddock's famous Home Town Hi Fi. Being the first sound system in Jamaica to have a tape delay as part of their performance equipment allowed Tubby's sound to especially highlight U Roy's vocals, but this was no trick: there simply had never been a Jamaican deejay who could ride on the rhythm in a continuous flow. He then recruited U Roy to record an album of fresh lyrics delivered over remakes of famous earlier rhythms. Several years & a number of hits later, he would be renamed Ranking Joe: one of the greatest deejays of the emerging Early Dancehall style which would come to dominate Kingston in the late 1970's & early 1980's.
