African Blues is a world music benefit compilation album originally released in 1998, with proceeds going to Voluntary Service Overseas. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, the release features African blues (a genre which is not simply an African re-interpretation of the American style, but carrying on traditions that were also exported to the Americas-see Origins of the blues)
It is common knowledge that the origin of the blues lies in West Africa, and that it was carried to America by slaves. One of the most authentic-sounding pieces combines American Corey Harris with the late Malian guitar legend Ali Farka Touré (who was a fan of John Lee Hooker). Bob Brozman teams with Djeli Moussa Diawara for an interesting African take on a Skip James song, combining guitar with the kora harp very successfully.

The Rough Guide to African Blues. Regarding this as simply a CD for the ears, rather than a selection of footnotes to a book of the same title, it does seem a respectable enough batch of items without any obvious rationale. I’ve not seen the book which goes along.

The Rough Guide to African Disco. The Rough Guide to African Disco is a world music compilation album originally released in 2013 featuring mainly 1970s and '80s African disco. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, the album contains two discs: an overview of the genre on Disc One, and a "bonus" Disc Two highlighting Cameroonian artist Maloko.
To Americans, the sound of South African jazz is both oddly familiar and wonderfully exotic. The familiar aspect is easy to explain: From Louis Armstrong onward, American artists have exerted a strong influence over South Africa's pop and jazz musicians. Genres as diverse as doo-wop, R&B and bebop have all been incorporated in South African jazz. This marriage of American influences with native melody patterns and tribal polyrhythms has made for some irresistible amalgams
Exclusively for Prime members. Sample this album Artist - Artist (Sample). I keep calling this a sampler because it doesn't really work as an album: the styles are too jarringly different to play well together, which is just fine.
