When Erich Leinsdorf recorded the 5th with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, on 17, 23 and 26 November 1963, it was only the fifth recording of the composition and the third in stereo. Bruno Walter had made the premiere recording in 1947, with the New York Philharmonic, on 78rmp (Mahler: Symphony N. ), and Hermann Scherchen the first LP version and only one throughout the mono years, for Westminster, in 1953 (Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C Sharp Minor)

The Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is an American orchestra based in Boston, Massachusetts. It is one of the five major American symphony orchestras commonly referred to as the "Big Five". Founded in 1881, the BSO plays most of its concerts at Boston's Symphony Hall and in the summer performs at Tanglewood. Andris Nelsons is the current music director of the BSO. Bernard Haitink currently holds the title of conductor emeritus of the BSO, and Seiji Ozawa has the title of BSO music director laureate.

With the Boston Symphony Orchestra he performed five Mahler's symphonies (Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6) and recorded all but the Fourth for RCA in versions that became touchstones for superior recorded sound. Leinsdorf brought impressive credentials and a wealth of experience to this music. He was born in Mahler's city, Vienna, just over eight months after the composer's death, and early in his career served as assistant to Mahler's own assistant and protégé, Bruno Walter.
