David Warren Brubeck (/ˈbruːbɛk/; December 6, 1920 – December 5, 2012) was an American jazz pianist and composer, considered one of the foremost exponents of cool jazz. He wrote a number of jazz standards, including "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "The Duke". Brubeck's style ranged from refined to bombastic, reflecting both his mother's attempts at classical training and his own improvisational skills.

Pianist Dave Brubeck took a chance recording Time Out, an album that used uncommon time signatures inspired by traditional music Brubeck encountered on a trip to Turkey. Not right away, though. The critics were not kind regarding this album, but it turned into a top selling record with a top 40 single. A lot has been going on with the tune (and album) that now needs an active ear to notice its complexity. It was chosen by the Library of Congress as one of the fifty recordings to be added to the National Recording Registry in 2005. Oh, and you’ll still hear these tunes all the time, even if you don’t notice.
