The Damned released their first album, Damned Damned Damned, on 18 February 1977. Produced by Nick Lowe, it was the first full-length album released by a British punk band, and included a new single, "Neat Neat Neat". The band went on tour to promote the album, in March opening for T. Rex on their final tour. The Damned tentatively reformed with the "Les Punks" line-up in early 1979, but originally performed as The Doomed to avoid potential trademark problems. Captain Sensible switched to guitar and keyboards, and after a brief period with Lemmy on bass for studio demos and a handful of live appearances, and a slightly longer period with Henry Badowski on bass, the bassist position was filled by Algy Ward, formerly of The Saints.

Known for their anarchic live shows, fast-paced music and biting lyrics, The Damned were one of the seminal punk bands of the 1970s, paving the way for groups to come by becoming the first UK punk acts to release a single, New Rose, in 1976, an album, Damned Damned Damned, in 1977, as well as being the first to tour the.
The Black Album was the fourth album by the Damned, and the first to feature Paul Gray on bass guitar the organ plays to midnight on Maldine Square tonight".

At just half an hour long, Damned Damned Damned is a permanent testimony to original guitarist Brian James' songwriting (ten of the 12 tracks are his) and the band's take-no-prisoners aesthetic. All the foursome wanted to do was rock, and that they do here. His sense of stop-start rhythm and fills is simply astounding, whether on "So Messed Up" or in his own one-minute goof, "Stab Yer Back. Though the Captain doesn't get his full chance to shine on bass, he's more than adequate, while James just cranks the amps and lets fly.
