Rich Versus Roach - Remastered 2017. Buddy Rich and Max Roach. 8. Toot Toot Tootsie Goodbye.

According to bassist Bill Crow, Rich reacted strongly to Max Roach's increasing popularity when he was the drummer for Charlie Parker, especially when a jazz critic stated Roach had topped Rich as the world's greatest drummer. In 1994, the Rich tribute album Burning for Buddy: A Tribute to the Music of Buddy Rich was released. Produced by Rush drummer/lyricist Neil Peart, the album features performances of Rich staples by a number of jazz and rock drummers such as Joe Morello, Steve Gadd, Max Roach, Billy Cobham, Dave Weckl, Simon Phillips, Steve Smith, and Peart himself, accompanied by the Buddy Rich Big Band. A second volume was issued in 1997.

Buddy Rich and Max Roach pulled no punches in this friendly but fierce competition. Gigi Gryce composed scores that would utilize all men as an ensemble, yet allow jump-off points for soloists in each rhythm section.

Album · 1959 · 12 Songs. Limehouse Blues (Alternate Take). Max Roach Quintet & Buddy Rich Quintet. 12. Toot, Toot, Tootsie, Goodbye. 12 Songs, 53 Minutes. Released: Jan 1, 1959.

Why not combine Buddy Rich's Quintet of 1959 (which consisted of altoist Phil Woods, trombonist Willie Dennis, pianist John Bunch and bassist Phil Leshin) with Max Roach's band of the time (consisting of trumpeter Tommy Turrentine, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, trombonist Julian Priester and bassist Bobby Boswell)? This CD reissues all of the music (including four "new" alternate takes) but the excess of drum solos and the relative brevity of space given to the horns results in a great deal of sameness from track to track.
