Aside from the original album on disc one, there are 17 bonus tracks on disc two of which are either demos or outtakes. One of the outtakes was a b side to Pinball Wizard called "Dogs Part Two", written by Keith Moon. It is a truly fantastic instrumental. Some of the other outtakes and demos are from Tommy such as Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Sally Simpson, Tommy's Holiday Camp and We're Not Gonna Take It. There are 5 demos that are marked as stereo only demos from Pete Townshend himself that are also from Tommy. Unfortunately, Tommy is one of the thin examples. An instrumental B-Side ("Dogs Part II") appears here, but most of the second disc (only about 50 minutes in length) consists of demos and alternate versions of Tommy tracks which don't need to be heard more than a couple of times.

So far I've played it more than Tommy itself! The live disc is also good to have but not essential since live Tommy from the 60's has been out before. This is the album that propelled the Who into legend land, and Pete's first foray into concept albums. I listen to this vinyl lp and it takes me back to a time when there was just so much great music being made. The story of Tommy ( which everyone knows ) shows the Who becoming a great band, not just top ten 45 rpm act. The music is youthful, but strong, and clearly laid the path for their next four lps-all of which were HOF lps.

The Ultimate Collection is a 2002 two-disc greatest hits set by The Who with both singles and top hits from albums, all of which have been remastered. The compilation was released by Polydor Records internationally and on MCA Records in the . The first 150,000 copies added a third disk with rare tracks and music videos. The album debuted on the Billboard 200 album chart on 29 June 2002, at No. 31 and hit No. 17 on the British charts

And everyone, of course, gets the chance to hear not just the original album in all its glory on the 75-minute disc one, but also 17 additional tracks (many, though not all, of them previously unreleased) on disc two. It's the additional material that's rather disappointing, for a few reasons. First, most of it really is marginal, even for the kind of fans who thrive on hearing outtakes and demos. A bunch of the cuts are merely vocal-less alternate backing tracks, similar to the ones on the official Tommy album but a little sloppier.

The album was originally produced by Chris Stein of Blondie and released on Animal Records. Since then, the bizarre and compelling album has only been reissued twice. Fifty years ago, The Who debuted Tommy at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. The ambitious rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind pinball wizard turned messiah catapulted The Who into the upper echelons of arena rock and marked a new transition in their storied career. Last year, Who frontman Roger Daltrey embarked on a world tour performing The Who's Tommy with an orchestra.
