Willem A. Nyland was an extraordinary man and a devoted student of the teachings of . Gurdjieff ars and, at Gurdjieff’s request, established groups to pursue the application of the teachings. Mr. Nyland died on this date, September 29, 1975. Willem Nyland was born on this day, October 27, in 1890. Nyland was very interested in Life and its possibilities. Gurdjieff in 1924, worked closely with him and passed on his knowledge of the teaching to the individuals in his groups.

Nyland was known for his clarity and seriousness as an early student of Gurdjieff in America. He applied Gurdjieff’s teaching in his life and reached a level of development recognized by all who met him. He always placed the emphasis on Gurdjieff’s own teachings and books, with little reliance on secondary material. Terry Winter Owens, former student of Willem Nyland, notes that With the passage of half a century since the death of Gurdjieff, it becomes increasingly obvious that there now flourish a number of different threads of the Gurdjieff wor. s yet, little has been written about W. A. Nyland although he had a profound impact on many people. Nyland and the Piano. Composer Terry Winter Owens describes what occurred when Willem Nyland asked her to go examine a Steinway grand piano that Timothy Leary had offered as a gift in the early 1960s. You Will Not Forget Work. Nyland (1890-1975)Willem A. Nyland was born and grew up in Utrecht, Holland, becoming a chemist. He came to the United States and earned his doctorate at Columbia University. Nyland applied Gurdjieff’s teaching in his life and reached a high level of development, encouraging his pupils to do the same. In his teaching, he placed emphasis on Gurdjieff’s own writings, stressing the importance of understanding the book Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson, insisting that the book be read three times, as Gurdjieff had indicated. He also taught the methods he had learned during his studies with . After Nyland’s death, many of the groups he helped establish continue to meet and function, carrying on the Gurdjieff tradition in the way Nyland had taught them.

Willem Adolph Visser 't Hooft (20 September 1900 – 4 July 1985) was a Dutch theologian who became the first secretary general of the World Council of Churches in 1948 and held this position until his retirement in 1966. Visser 't Hooft was born in Haarlem, in the Netherlands and in his early adult years, was involved in Dutch student Christian movement and soon became involved internationally. Nyland was a student and teacher of Gurdjieff’s Ideas for over 50 years. Acting on direct instructions from Gurdjieff, Mr. Nyland taught and inspired numerous people from all walks of life, opening up for them a wide range of spiritual possibilities. Today, the groups of W. Nyland continue to provide a vital source for the study and practice of Gurdjieff’s ideas.
