When considering the whole sweep of 20th century music, the 1960s loom especially large. Some of the importance placed on the music of the decade can be traced to demographics (the massive baby boomer generation born after World War II reached prime music-listening age) and technology (the consumer electronics industry was creating new listening spaces in automobiles and on television, and advancements in sound reinforcement made large concerts possible). Still, there’s no getting around the fact that the music of the ’60s made a huge impact at the time and never really went away.
A Night in Tunisia is a jazz album by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers which was recorded in August 1960. In the original liner notes by Barbara J. Gardner, she wrote: "This album is a prime example of Blakey's expressed desire to showcase his young talent. Not only is there extended solo room for the musicians; further, all but the title tune were written and arranged by the talented junior jazz citizens in his group". A Night in Tunisia" (D. Gillespie, F. Paparelli) – 11:16.
Left wing thought is taking hold. Barry records Barry Harris at the Jazz Workshop with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes. Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's first Blue Note LP Open Sesame includes tenorist Tina Brooks. Tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter joins Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. At what is first scheduled to be just another "blowing date," tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley records the classic Soul Jazz album Soul Station. The rhythm section includes Art Blakey, Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers. How could you go wrong with these four first-rate musicians?
The next styles of dances to hit the scene were line dances. The Hully Gully, is a series of steps that are called out by the MC, which originated in the early 1960s by Frank Rocco. The steps were relatively easy to handle, the speed was the fun part. Rocco introduced this dance at the Cadillac Hotel in Miami, Fl which lead way for many more dances just like it to come. The Madison was probably the most popular line dance of the decade
By Chris Tyle - Jazz Musician and Historian. America entered the 1960s with the status quo of the 1950s, but it was a decade marked by incredible change, turbulence, and, once again, a war in Southeast Asia. The country elected a young, energetic president in 1960, but John F. Kennedy was felled by an assassin before the end of his term as was civil rights leader Martin Luther King, J. and John Kennedy’s brother Senator Robert Kennedy. The war in Vietnam created massive demonstrations, especially by those under 30, to demand that the . end its participation there. Technical strides put a man on the moon, and the invention of the transistor made music more portable.
