Lew Tabackin 's guest appearance with the Netherlands Metropole Orchestra is one of the most enjoyable in their series of collaborations with jazz soloists. Tabackin is a swinging tenor saxophonist and a top notch flute player as well, playing both on the exciting opener by Duke Ellington, "Battle Royal" and showcasing his lyrical flute on "Speak Lo.

Released by Koch Jazz label in 1999 this . outing features the talents of tenor Tabackin with arrangements primarily by Conductor Rob Pronk. as usual plays with precision and provides ample room for the virtuoso technique of Tabackin as soloist in the carefully crafted arrangements of Pronk. I found Pronk's writing for strings to be particularly sensitive as in Benny Golson's "Are you real" which finds Tabackin stretching out on tenor. Tabackin as can be expected, swings freely using his muscular attack and tone on tenor while his flute.
