Bob Wills' songbook - which, of course, includes tunes popularized, not written, by Wills - is one of the most resilient in country music, ranking alongside Hank Williams in popularity and its ability to be reinterpreted in continuously fresh fashions. So, it comes as no surprise that George Jones, one of the greatest singers in country, did a bang-up job with his tribute album, the 1962 platter George Jones Sings Bob Wills.
George Jones was born in Saratoga, Texas, in 1931. He began his career by performing on the street to help earn money for his large and impoverished family, and after a brief stint in the military began to pursue his musical ambitions in earnest. But Jones would experience a reversal of fortunes in 1955 when he made No. 4 on the country charts with "Why Baby Why, an up-tempo rumination on heartbreak. On the heels of that first success, more hits followed, including "What Am I Worth" (1956), "Just One More" (1956) and Don’t Stop the Music (1957), each of which reached the country Top 10.

Justice Thomas begins by thanking Jones for having sent him two letters, several cassette tapes and a CD. Enlarge this image. Brendan Banaszak/NPR. It turns out, Justice Thomas is a big Possum fan. "I can't begin to tell how good it made.
