Symphony No. 3. Composed By – William Schuman.

Harris' Symphony No. 3 is a bit rough at the edges, though this is apparently in accord with his intentions and is not necessarily due to the New York Philharmonic's raw sound. The bold drama of this symphony is unmistakably American, though Harris' use of color shows what he learned from Nadia Boulanger.

LEONARD BERNSTEIN'S concert with the New York Philharmonic last night was a numerologist's delight, consisting of the third symphonies of three significant American composers. Three Thirds, beginning with Roy Harris's one-movement symphony from 1938, going on to William Schuman's more erudite 1941 composition and closing grandly with Aaron Copland's 1946 masterpiece. Each represents the best a famous American achieved in the symphonic medium.

Symphony No. 3 was Aaron Copland's final symphony. It was written between 1944 and 1946, and its first performance took place on October 18, 1946, the Boston Symphony Orchestra performing under Serge Koussevitzky. If the early Dance Symphony is included in the count, it is actually Copland's fourth symphony
