Evans was an unknown entity then and the album sold a mere 800 copies in its first year. A few more albums followed, including the better-selling Everybody Digs Bill Evans in 1958, until Evans found the right musicians to form his vision of a jazz trio. That serendipitous event took place during an engagement Evans had at the Basin Street East club, playing the intermission breaks between sets by Benny Goodman who was making a comeback. I remember playing in the Village Vanguard with Bill and Scott LaFaro with only 4 people in the club, and talking to Max Gordon and saying, ‘Hey, man, can we go home; there’s only four people,’ and he says, ‘Oh, no, you’ve still got a table of people and you’ve got to play another se. But the trio kept playing, improving and gelling together as a unit.

Bill Evans, with virtuoso bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, reinvented the jazz piano trio, creating stunning contrapuntal dialogues that merged luminous lyricism with layers of complex, elusive harmonies, its moments of limpid beauty suddenly giving way to surging rhythms. The trio's finest recorded moments, these performances were captured just 10 days before LaFaro's death in a car accident. The original releases-Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby-are celebrated masterpieces. More than just a jazz album, this particular collection transports the listener to a time, a place, an era. It's like 1961 is now. This is a great album for both a close listen or for studying, introspection or relaxation.

Album Information : Title: More From The Vanguard. Release Date:1998-01-01. The release of this LP in 1984 was a welcome event, for it consists of alternate versions of seven selections played by the classic Bill Evans/Scott LaFaro/Paul Motian trio at the Village Vanguard. Highlights include "Alice in Wonderland," "All of You," "My Romance" and "Waltz for Debby. All of the music from this legendary engagement has since been reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide.

Sunday at the Village Vanguard is the initial volume of a mammoth recording session by the Bill Evans Trio, from June 25, 1961 at New York's Village Vanguard documenting Evans' first trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian. Its companion volume is Waltz for Debby. The shapshifting reading of Miles Davis' "Solar," is a place where angularity, counterpoint, and early modalism all come together in a knotty and insistent, yet utterly seamless blend of post-bop aesthetics and expanded harmonic intercourse with Motian, whose work, while indispensable in the balance of the trio, comes more into play here, and is more assertive with his half-time accents to.

I have to check for detail when I get home, but I have a Verve release called More From The Village Vanguard. Not in the sonic league of either of the AP or Acoustech releases, but interesting that there were other attempts to put out more from these dates. It may not have been played, but there's a small wart on side 2, causing it to skip.

Nonetheless, a short go-to list would probably include the iconic live sessions of Bill Evans and his trio captured on tape by Riverside Records back in June of 1961. For sheer improvisational genius and telepathic group interplay, these recordings can't be beat. Furthermore, the sonic magic that teleports you to your own personal table at the Village Vanguard has always been an undeniable perk of these sides. Upon initial examination, producer Orrin Keepnews decided to pick and choose from the music recorded over five sets on June 25th, 1961
