The New York Philharmonic performed most of the 1979 film’s original soundtrack. And some of the players from that performance are still in the band. Manhattan is perhaps Allen’s best soundtrack, and certainly his most famous. The lush orchestral score features the music of George Gershwin. The use of music has been parodied endlessly. There’s lots of great bits we didn’t know. The original soundtrack was recorded in the worst storm in half a century, causing concert pianist Gary Graffman to miss the session.

The film features the music of George Gershwin including his famous piece, 'Rhapsody in Blue', which has been said to have inspired the movie. In a discussion with 'Silvio Bizio', Woody Allen said that the picture "evolved from the music. I was listening to a record album of overtures from famous George Gershwin shows, and I thought 'This would be a beautiful thing to make a movie in black-and-white, you know, and make a romantic movie".

The New York Philharmonic, officially the y Society of New York, In. globally known as New York Philharmonic Orchestra (NYPO) or New York y Orchestra, is a symphony orchestra based in New York City in the United States. It is one of the leading American orchestras popularly referred to as the "Big Five"  . After only a dozen public performances and barely four years old, the Philharmonic organized a concert to raise funds to build a new music hall. The centerpiece was the American premiere of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, to take place at Castle Garden on the southern tip of Manhattan.
