Alva Noto's latest venture into the Xerrox series has finally arrived. This time, the dusty tracks of Vo. are shadowed by darkened clouds, and the air has become electrified with higher-voltage static. For instance, track 4 sounds almost as harsh as a droney, hypnotic track from Merzbow's Electro Magnetic Unit. However, no one can deny Vo. 's highly intelligent and often touching musicality. The mood is sombre on many tracks, but Alva Noto expertly seduces the listener by peeling back layers of static to reveal the trademark strings which broke our hearts in Vo.

Xerrox Vol. 2 is the sixth studio album by German electronic artist Alva Noto. On this record, the author turns to a list of contemporary musicians, including Michael Nyman, Stephen O’Malley, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. The record is the second part of his Xerrox quintet of albums.

Listen free to Alva Noto – Xerrox Vol. 2 (Xerrox Phaser Acat 1, Xerrox Rin and more). Xerrox Vol. 2 undertakes an intense journey and affords the luxury to take its time. It works with samples that have been gathered and developed in the United States – the so-called "new world" – where the album also has almost completely been recorded.

Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol. 2 There was a moment in 2000 when electronic music was on the verge of suffocation. Sounds were miniaturized, isolated, deconstructed and exploded. The rhythm, kick and boom were sucked dry, leaving behind only cracked skeletons and whirring machines. It's beautiful weather. Such stately orchestral maneuvers conjure thoughts of Gas, yet Noto turns Wolfgang Voigt's stormy weather inside out, opening up onto an arid landscape of endless horizon lines.

Reproduction, alteration, and decay are the main focuses of Alva Noto's Xerrox series: the music consists of samples altered by inserting noise through several rounds of copying. The resulting tracks seem to be atomizing before your ears, with an occasional effort to coalesce. Where Vol. 1 offered a sequence of alternating short raw pieces and mid-length ambient tracks, Vol. 2 presents itself as a more even and almost continuous suite of pieces.

On this follow up to Xerrox Vol. 1 (Raster-Noton, 2007), Carsten Nicolai turns up the volume in static electricity working with the concept of copying sounds. A copy of a copy of a copy in digital format may be flawless, so what does Nicolai do? For this feat, Nicolai along with Christoph Brünggel created a "sample transformer".
