Scenery is a 1976 jazz album by Japanese pianist Ryo Fukui. It was Fukui's first release. The album was virtually ignored in the US, as it came out at a time of reduced interest in jazz in America. However, it was well appreciated by Japanese fans and critics alike. In the decades since Scenery's release, the album has earned greater critical praise. Fukui's dexterity and self-taught style has earned him comparison to such piano greats as McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans.

Scenery ‎(LP, Album, RE, Hal). I was hooked on this album from the first song. The inclusion of a Miles Davis Quintet song starts you off strong, then the other compositions keep it going. I never thought I was a fan of piano-heavy jazz but Fukui immediately changed my mind. Always glad to find more Coltrane-like jazz. I hope a high quality version is coming soon.

Because of Jap-Jazz’s confused identity, one the genre’s most important albums was Ryo Fukui’s Scenery. While other artists were busy getting to know the textures of music, self-taught pianist Ryo, accompanied by a drummer and a bass player, decided to give his own spin on American jazz. He borrowed elements of post-bop, cool jazz, and even blues to create something unique, something unheard of before: a jazz album that prioritized composition rather than improvisation. The six song album continuously proves that Ryo is the complete master at his craft. Every section flows seamlessly into one.

I was listening Aphex Twin and I end up here :D.

  • For those who loves the track EARLY SUMMER, please check the track SKELETON DANCE from BARRY MILES and let's see ... ;)

  • Extremely good jazz album by Ryo Fukui (RIP), I still can't believe that this was his debut album and that he is a self-taught pianist that started playing the piano 4 years before he made this album

  • Yes, it's true. The quality of this record is outstanding, highly recommended!

  • Stellar fidelity. Absolutely stellar. I am very impressed! ! !

  • Everything that everyone is saying about the sound quality... it's true. Despite all the hype I'd read surrounding this reissue, I was still blown away by how good it sounds. It honestly sounds like you are in the same room as the band at times. Thoroughly impressed. I skipped on the 180g for this version and so can't compare the two, but have read they sound the same. My copy is a tiny bit warped, but doesn't affect playback

  • This pressing is 140gr (vs 2nd pressing = 180gr). No Obi Strip and normal cover (thinner). Sound wise, it has the same exact technical specifications as the cosmetically superior version. In other words, if you pay a bit more you have the same record but with nicer looks. Your choice. In terms of sound quality, they are both musically mind-blowing. You cannot get much better than this. Buy with uncompromised confidence.

  • Is this a new pressing w/out the Obi strip? I ordered a copy from Amoeba's site and got one without the Obi.

  • I confirm the quality is equal, and this is the same runouts, just cheaper than the first pressing [180g, Stoughton Sleeve, Obi Strip] yet not cheap at all :D

  • Stefan.van.Ettinger It is a repress from 2018 without Obi. Nevertheless, the quality is great I can assure you. Worth the buy. Are the runouts the same as the other release earlier in the year?

  • It is a repress from 2018 without Obi. Nevertheless, the quality is great I can assure you. Worth the buy.

  • As many have noted this sounds quite good. Probably the best reissue of the album. Its got a fullness to the soundspectrum, capturing bass very well. I will say though that the album might be EQed just a slight smidge too low making some drum and piano parts sound a little lower in the frequency spectrum than they probably should be, but that might be solved with a brighter cart.Although this release might not have the amazing detail or imaging of say what a Music Matters and Kevin Gray cut would, its great none the less. It might just be the limit of the recordings for all I know.I must say too that the pressing is fantastic. The vinyl is quiet and has no crackles at all.Equipment Used:Rega RP1 with Nagaoka MP-200 CartridgeCyrus 2 AmplifierSystem Fidelity SF-3050 Tower SpeakersCustom made HQ Speaker Cables

  • This is such an impressive reissue. Everything about it is top quality. I've never heard this album with such clarity before! Get this while you can!

  • No, the logo is print on the OBI, not directly on the cover.

  • Excuse my ignorance but I have to ask, is the "We Release Jazz" logo imprinted onto the album art itself?

  • I got it today ! (Two hours ago... finally). But to fully enjoy a pressing like that, I would need to replace the stylus.

  • I recently purchased a Top copy with intact obi. $800 bucks but well worth it for this masterpiece. Looks like a new release even though it's over 40 years old. Only played a few seconds but I plan to play it in it's entirety during a listening party after i get my new turntable. For now I have youtube. Such raw talent! Such rhythmic spirtit captured in this original pressing!

  • You should buy the latest reissue and help people on how it compares to your original in sound quality.

  • Make no mistake, this is a fine fine record. a splendid pressing, a lovely thick cover, and the music is just incredible. pay the money buy on sight.

  • What a fantastic release! I don't think I've ever heard a vinyl with such pure sound. Truly amazing.

  • Have not heard the original, but this is dead quiet. Fantastic press

  • My copy sounds great except on the last track which has a little a bit distorsion and crackles. Has anyone the same or is it bad luck ?

  • Bring it back to the record shop, complain and get a new copy !

  • I have cleaned it with my RCM but it didn't change anything.

  • Perhaps it is a micro dust, try to clean it, just checked my copy, sounds perfect!

  • Fantastic reissue, fantastic album! Amazing sound and the thick sleeve is a true standout.

  • Agreed - this has to be one of the best sounding records I have ever heard.

  • This is the pressing to get - sounds a lot better then the 2017 Nadja reissue.

  • A bit late to reply, but yes, i have both. This remaster sounds a lot clearer and more well defined compared to the Nadja pressing. The treble is way better.

  • I just like to know if you compared both versions. I'm about to order this record but Japanese pressings are known to be very good. Thanks for you reply.

  • WOW just WOW the album is amazing yes we all know that but the pressing is just incredible, id never heard of Half Speed Mastering until I purchased this and his other release Mellow Dreams and even on my crappy system it sounds sublime, probably the best sounding records I own.
