The High Holidays at Congregation B'nai Emunah. From the first sounds of shofar through the waning fall days of the Sukkot harvest festival, our community is bustling with action throughout the High Holiday season. The heart of this activity takes place on Rosh Ha-Shanah and Yom Kippur. With services, youth programming and meals happening throughout, we hope you'll find a way to connect with our community in this season of rejoicing and renewal. Below is a brief overview of our service calendar for the Holidays.

Its Hebrew analogue, Yamim Nora'im (ימים נוראים), "Days of Awe, is more flexible: it can refer just to those holidays, or to the Ten Days of Repentance, or to the entire penitential period, starting as early as the beginning of Elul, and (more rarely) ending as late as Shemini Atzeret. The term Three Pilgrimage Festivals (שלוש רגלים, shalosh regalim) refers to Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot. When used in comparison to Yom Tov, it refers to Chol HaMoed, the intermediate days of Passover and Sukkot. ag or chag (חג) ("festival"), plural chagim (חגים), can be used whenever yom tov or moed is. It is also used to describe Hanukkah and Purim, as well as Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day) and Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day). Ta'anit (תענית), or, less commonly, tzom (צום), refers to a fast.

All holidays begin at sundown on the evening before the date specified in the tables below. For example, if the dates for Rosh Hashana were listed as Sep 30-Oct 1, then the holiday begins at sundown on Sep 29 and ends at nightfall on Oct 1. Print. Dates in bold are yom tov, so they have similar obligations and restrictions to Shabbat in the sense that normal "work" is forbidden. Sep 30-Oct 1, 2019 M‑Tu. Oct 9, 2019 W. Day of Atonement.

Whether religious or not, most Jewish people attend synagogue on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (they are similar to Easter and Christmas for nominal Christians). Many Jewish people pay this price because they want to cover their bases spiritually, so to speak. The first holy day is Rosh Hashanah, the traditional Jewish New Year – mentioned in the Bible as the Feast of Trumpets. The second holy day, Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) is the most important day in the Jewish calendar. In biblical times, this was the only day when the high priest was allowed to enter into the Holy of Holies in the Temple. On this day, the high priest would take two goats. On one goat he would confess the sins of Israel and then send it into the wilderness to die as the scapegoat.
