Album (also known as Compact Disc or Cassette depending on the format) is the fifth album by the English rock band Public Image Ltd, released on 27 January 1986. A departure from their previous releases, John Lydon was advised by trusted music producer Bill Laswell to take on an all-star cast of session and trusted musicians, including Steve Vai, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tony Williams and Ginger Baker. The resulting album gave PiL one of its highest charting songs, "Rise".

Public Image Ltd. Biography by Mark Deming. John Lydon's post-Pistols project parlayed its post-punk mix of dub, avant garde, and rock into (unlikely) pop hits.

Public Image Ltd (abbreviated as PiL) are an English post-punk band formed by singer John Lydon (. Johnny Rotten), guitarist Keith Levene, bassist Jah Wobble, and drummer Jim Walker. The group's personnel has changed frequently over the years; Lydon has been the sole constant member. Following the breakup of the Sex Pistols, Lydon was eager to pursue a more experimental project and formed PiL in 1978. Later that year, the group released its debut First Issue (1978), featuring an abrasive, bass-heavy sound and drawing on elements of dub, noise, and progressive rock  . Public Image: First Issue (1978). Metal Box (1979) and Paris au Printemps (1980). The Flowers of Romance (1981). 1987–1992: Later career.

Public Image is about the way a stage persona can become a lie that a performer is forced to live out in perpetuity. Lydon sings about Johnny Rotten as a theatrical role that trapped him and which he’s now casting off. Starting all over with his given name and a new set of musical accomplices, Lydon was determined to stay true to himself. The group’s name came from Muriel Sparks’ novel The Public Image, about a movie actress whose career is ruined but who, the ending hints, is freed to embark on an authentic post-fame existence

Hello, hello Hello, hello Hello, hello. You never listened to a word that I said You only seen me from the clothes that I wear Or did the interest go so much deeper It must have been to the color of my hair. Public image you got what you wanted The public image belongs to me It's my entrance my own creation My grand finale, my goodbye. Public image Public image Goodbye. Along with being released as a single, it appeared on PiL’s 1978 debut album Public Image: First Issue. The single was originally packaged in a fake newspaper that makes outrageous statements such as Refused To Play Russian Roullete, No Ones Innocent, Except Us, Donut’s Laugh saves life (Donut being a nickname for Jim Walker) and The Girl Who Drove Me To Tea among others.

  • my blue label version has a sleeve ie newspaper , got it day of release

  • Thanks Kruisspin, I have owned this since released, never knew that! I had just accepted it as avant-garde racket. And appreciated the irony of a racket entitled "Cowboy Song" - as I'm not a country music fan. A-side is, of course, an awesome piece of work.

  • quit rare first ever release of any PIL record in japan from february 1979, this single was released a month before the lp in 1979, this is not to easy to find anymore and has a great sleeve as you can see wich is very similar to the lp sleeve, nice japanese text and lyrics in english and an essay on the rear of the sleeve in japanese...

  • ... review moved.

  • Does this re-issue have the locked groove on the b-side like the original?

  • Just listened to it, and the run out grooves go silent like most 45s.

  • for all the new generation punkers, the 'cowboy song' is a two channel recording on the left and right side of the groeve, there are two different songs just move your stereo knob to left or right and you hear two different mono versions, this was brilliant of them !

  • i have a copy which is VS 529, but i can't find it listed.

  • I understand even if others don't. My copy is a newspaper sleeve with the variant etching of VS228 A2E which puts it down as a first press BUT the middle is solid and appears to have the anti-slip ring mentioned in a slightly later 1978 press. Appears to be a crossover press?!? Yep I play the damd (sic) thing and enjoy it...but a real vinyl fan also takes pleasure in knowing what and which one he's got!

  • if you can't find it,just play the damd thing and and enjoy !

  • My single, has also the number VS 228, but has the "usual colours" of Virgin: green at one side and red on the other side.

  • That is this release then - http://www.discogs.com/Public-Image-Ltd-Public-Image/release/440730
