In addition to the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu, founded in 1847 and devoted to opera and ballet, Barcelona has had several symphonic orchestras since 1888. From 1910 to 1924, a private-based Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona gave its concerts in the Teatre Eldorado, led by Joan Lamote de Grignon. In 1944, a new Barcelona civic orchestra – the current Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona – was founded with the name of Barcelona Municipal Orchestra, created by the City Hall and promoted by the Catalan conductor and composer Eduard Toldrà. Toldrà, through his leadership, helped to consolidate the orchestra's presence very early in the cultural life of the city.

This wonderful 1987 video, capturing Freddie Mercury's unforgettable collaboration with Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballé, accompanied the very first single from the 'Barcelona' album (which was to follow a full year later). This unexpected and unlikely merging of talent took the world by storm, and this was the first of three singles released from the album. The Director was David Mallet and it was filmed at Pinewood Studios in London. The single was released in the UK on 26th October 1987.

The OBC (Barcelona Symphony Orchestra - the National Orchestra of Catalonia) was founded in 1944 under the direction of Maestro Eduard Toldrà. In September 2000, the OBC won the Latin Grammy Award to the Best Classical Album for La Dolores CD, in 2004 for Carmen Symphony CD and in 2006 for the CD with Michel Camilo Rhapsody in blue produced by TELARC. The OBC is part of the Consorci de l’Auditori i l’Orquestra, formed by the Generalitat of Catalonia and Barcelona City Council. Since April 1999, the OBC performs in its own venue, the L'Auditori of Barcelona, designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo.
