Somewhere in my crawlspace is the first 78 recording of Songs of the Auvergne by Madeline Grey. Her voice was not strong, very light, but perfect for these beautiful songs. This recording by Netania Davrath comes closest to that of Madeline Grey and I could listen to it forever. Even if you don't care for the operetic voice, she rises above that on folk music of the French Auvergne arranged by Joseph Canteloube in 1924. This version is the standard that others emulate. Davrath interpets each song with all the depth and pathos of a stage actor.

Chants d'Auvergne is a collection of folk songs from the Auvergne region of France arranged for soprano voice and orchestra or piano by Joseph Canteloube between 1923 and 1930. The best known of the songs is the "Baïlèro", which has been frequently recorded and performed in slight variations of Canteloube's arrangement, such as for choir or instrumental instead of the original soprano solo.
