Uncertainty occurs when you do not know all the possible states. As Ashby put it, variety is a concept inseparable from that of ‘information’. Requisite Variety? Requisite means necessary or required.

Dorothy Ashby’s enduring influence as a musician is hard to overstate. She was a child prodigy who played violin, saxophone, harp and guitar and was giving concerts at the age of twelve and gave harp demonstrations throughout her early career. As a jazz artist she not only strummed the harp but learned to play the harp isolating and articulating individual notes the way a lead guitarist would. She attended Wayne State University in Detroit where she studied piano and music education. After she graduated, she began playing the piano in the jazz scene in Detroit, though by 1952 she had made the harp her main instrument. Ashby's trio, including her husband John Ashby on drums, regularly toured the country, recording albums for several different record labels. She played with Louis Armstrong and Woody Herman, among others.

  • Long-time favorite. Been in my collection since it came out. Just pure, good ol' fiddle music backed up by players who have a solid sense of the music. Nothing pretentious here. The music speaks for itself. Would like to find another album by these guys.
