Where her 2015 solo debut, Tomorrow Is My Turn, was essentially a covers album, gaining its importance through context, Freedom Highway relies on originals, but the past is never far behind. This should be expected from Giddens, who is at her core a folk artist building upon - and expanding - tradition, but it's still startling to realize how she establishes a vernacular at the outset of Freedom Highway, then explores all of the possibilities of African-American folk music on the album.

Freedom is the fifth studio album by American indie rock band Amen Dunes. It was released on March 30, 2018 by Sacred Bones Records. The album was written by Damon McMahon in Portugal and New York City in 2015. It was recorded primarily at the renowned Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village.

Freedom Highway draws upon deep American traditions, and while its form may be a throwback, it speaks to a time when the phrase "Black Lives Matter" can be seen as controversial and, in doing so, it illustrates how these issues are deeply ingrained in American life and cannot be forgotten. Always ambitious, l folk artist Rhiannon Giddens uses Freedom Highway, her second solo album, for a contemporary end: tracing the roots of the movement from plantation property to today.

Freedom Highway, Grammy Award–winner and 2017 Grammy nominee Rhiannon Giddens' follow-up to her highly praised debut album Tomorrow Is My Turn, will be released by Nonesuch Records on February 24, 2017. The record includes nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote while she and her band toured after Tomorrow Is My Turn's 2015 release, along with a traditional song and two civil rights-era songs, "Birmingham Sunday" and Staple Singers' well-known "Freedom Highway," from which the album takes its name. Giddens and the band will tour the .

Freedom Highway follows Giddens's expertly curated and recorded Tomorrow Is My Turn, a mostly-covers album that honored the work of overlooked African-American artists like the soprano Florence Quivar alongside icons like Nina Simone. In her new work, Giddens speaks for the truly silenced: slaves; people murdered during the 1960s struggle for civil rights; young men felled by police bullets in city streets today.

Freedom Highway is Giddens’ second solo album. Most of the songs are written by her and tell of racist and sexual violence from slavery and the Civil War through the Civil Rights Movement and up to today. There is a brutal continuity in these experiences, an old, old song as she describes it. Two of the songs come from the Civil Rights Movement. The Staples Singers’ Freedom Highway is a driving song of determined resistance, while Richard Farina’s Birmingham Sunday poignantly describes the racist murder of four young black girls when an Alabama church was bombed in 1963
