Clark Virgil Terry Jr. (December 14, 1920 – February 21, 2015) was an American swing and bebop trumpeter, a pioneer of the flugelhorn in jazz, composer, educator, and NEA Jazz Masters inductee. He played with Charlie Barnet (1947), Count Basie (1948–51), Duke Ellington (1951–59), Quincy Jones (1960), and Oscar Peterson (1964-96). He was also with The Tonight Show Band from 1962 to 1972.
He attended Vashon High School and began his professional career in the early 1940s, playing in local clubs. He served as a bandsman in the United States Navy during World War II. His first instrument was valve trombone. Clark Terry (also released as Introducing Clark Terry and Swahili) is the debut album by American jazz trumpeter Clark Terry featuring tracks recorded in early 1955 and released on the EmArcy label.

Beginning in 1951, Clark Terry held one of the most coveted spots in jazz music and became a member of the Duke Ellington band. He would perform on some of the grandest stages in the world with Duke until 1959, which was when this performance was recorded. Here is "El Gato" captured in Zurich.
Bop Swing Jazz Instrument Trumpet Jazz. Fellow Ellington sidemen Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Woode, and Sam Woodyard are present, along with Raymond Fol at the piano. Terry was one of the most gifted trumpeters to grace the Ellington band and he blossoms when he has more opportunities to solo in a small group setting like this one. Gonsalves proves to be the perfect foil for Terry as they trade lines on several of the numbers.
Jazz knows no limits and no boundaries. Following such logic, I have liberally placed tunes from avant-garde artists on this list. I believe that slightly eccentric creators such as Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders are every bit as important to jazz as are Billie Holiday and Dave Brubeck. This is not a list that was thrown together lightly, either. It was stitched together one song at a time, minute by minute, hour by hour.
The School of Jazz and Contemporary Music at The New School mourns the loss of our alumnus and friend, the legendary trumpeter Roy Hargrove. A multiple Grammy and DownBeat Award winner, Roy Hargrove was one of the finest musicians of his generation. His trumpet playing was as good as it gets, no matter what the style. Improvisation is in our DNA and on display through the broad range of student performances taking place on campus and around New York City. Carrying Forward the Tradition of Social Awareness Through Music. School of Jazz and Contemporary Music instructor Linda Oh inspires students to explore the role of jazz in social change. Eddie, BFA Jazz Performace '12 The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, takes risks that both bolster his craft and repertoire.
