Thames House is an office building in Millbank, London, on the north bank of the River Thames adjacent to Lambeth Bridge. Originally used as offices by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), it has served as the headquarters of the United Kingdom's internal Security Service (commonly known as MI5) since December 1994. It also served as the London headquarters of the Northern Ireland Office (NIO) until March 2013.

The River Thames is a large river in England. The Thames is 346 kilometres (215 statute miles) long. Its source is near the village of Kemble in the Cotswolds; it flows through Oxford (where it is called "The Isis", a shortening of its Latin name), Reading, Maidenhead, Eton and then Windsor.

The River Thames is most widely known because of its significant presence through the bustling city of London. However, London is not the only home of the Thames (pronounced. as it also flows through Reading, Oxford, Windsor, Eastbourne, Eton, Staines, Richmond and more. Its presence is felt in a total of seven different counties. The official course of the river has been altered slightly to ease navigation. The Thames is tidal in places, rising by up to seven metres during high tide in the city of London. It is fed by more than 20 tributaries. Because the River Thames comprises areas of both sea water and fresh water, it is home to a wide array of fauna and flora.

The Romans developed the Port of London around 50AD when they established a settlement called Londinium on the River Thames. It later became a major trading and ship building area for the Saxons, Normans and Tudors. Clay pipes, centuries old, found in the Thames. During the 16th century London became a centre of shipbuilding and repair. In 1558 a commission was set up to select legal quays for imports and by 1576 London was the world’s foremost trading port.

The view is taken from the Terrace of Old Somerset House. Its New Gallery facing the river had been built in 1661-61 for Henrietta Maria, the Queen Mother and was perhaps designed by Inigo Jones. The building was subsequently the home of the Royal Academy, and part of it is now occupied by the Courtauld Institute of Art. The sky line is dominated by St Paul's Cathedral, completed in 1709. When the two views are placed side by side they create a long panoramic view of the curve of the river, the equivalent on the Thames of Canaletto's wide-angled views of the Bacino in Venice. Joseph Smith; from whom bought by George III, 1762.

The river Thames is one of the cultural landmarks of London. According to Mitchell (2011), Thames also represents a certain a way of life, a character, that portrays who and what the Londoners and the London life are all about. The river, for instance, reminds people of how Londinium was established during the Roman conquest
