Though Colin Davis remains very active as a recording artist, latterly in the brilliant LSO Live series, it is good to be reminded quite what superb qualities his earliest recordings had. In 1960, as a live-wire young conductor about to become music director of the Sadler's Wells Opera Company (predecessor of ENO), he had one of his first really big successes in the theatre - all the more revelatory because it was totally unexpected

Oedipus rex was written towards the beginning of Stravinsky's neoclassical period, and is considered one of the finest works from this phase of the composer's career. He had considered setting the work in Ancient Greek, but decided ultimately on Latin: in his words "a medium not dead but turned to stone. In 1960 at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, a production by Colin Graham, directed by Michel Saint-Denis, conducted by Colin Davis and designed by Abd’Elkader Farrah.
Michel St Denis’s famous staging for Sadler’s Wells Opera more than 40 years ago, conducted by the youthful Colin Davis, was an occasion that brought this singular masterpiece to life in an electrifying way, undoubtedly helped by the confined space of the old Sadler’s Wells Theatre. It familiarised many with a work then less often heard than is the case today. That production was a hieratical, taut experience never to be forgotten. Stravinsky Oedipus Rex.
